Klein® Tools ‘State of the Industry’ survey finds family support crucial in bringing people into the electrical industry

Survey also finds three in 10 electricians would encourage their daughter to be an electrician and more than 60% of electricians say they’ve worked with a woman on the jobsite in the past year

April 12, 2016 (Lincolnshire, IL) – Klein Tools (http://www.kleintools.com), for professionals since 1857, today announced findings from its second-annual ‘State of the Industry’ survey. This year, Klein Tools took a new direction with the survey focusing on family and asking more than 200 union and non-union electricians about their experiences getting into the field and on the jobsite. As a sixth-generation family business, Klein Tools wanted to know how much support electricians get at home, which helps Klein create programs to better support future electricians and their families. The survey also specifically focused on women in the electrical industry, finding how many regularly work on jobsites with union and non-union electricians.

Family Ties & Influence

The Klein ‘State of the Industry’ survey found family and friends have important influence over those deciding to become electricians, particularly among union members. In fact, they may be the strongest factor in determining if someone will apply for an apprenticeship and commit to a career as an electrician.

· Three in ten electricians (30%) have one or more other electricians in the family, with union members (39%) significantly more likely than non-union members (23%) to have another electrician in their family.

  • One-half of electricians (51%) were encouraged to become an electrician.
  • More than nine in ten electricians (92%) would encourage someone to become an electrician.
  • Two-thirds of electricians (64%) would encourage their children to become an electrician.
  • Three in ten electricians (30%) would specifically encourage their daughter to become an electrician.

“Family is what Klein Tools is based on and it’s important apprentices have family support when deciding to become an electrician,” said Mark Klein, president of Klein Tools. “We know not all students receive the support they need when considering trade schools and we are actively working with apprenticeship organizations to ensure students have access to the resources, tools, information and leadership necessary to be successful in this industry.”

Women on Jobsites

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, in 2014 women represented only 2.4 percent of the electrician workforce. Klein Tools wanted to know how often women worked on job sites in the past year and was pleased to find the majority of jobsites had women regularly working on them.

· More than three-fifths of electricians (62%) report having worked with one or more women on job sites in the past year.

o Union members (78%) are significantly more likely than non-union members (51%) to have worked with one or more women on job sites in the past year.

“This is a good start, but is still markedly lower than what we believe it should be,” said Mark Klein, president of Klein Tools. “With numerous talented tradespeople expected to retire in the coming years, we need more trained electricians filling in the ranks and we support anyone who wants to contribute to this ever-changing and challenging industry.”

The Klein Tools ‘State of the Industry’ survey was conducted by Russell Research, an independent survey research firm, which conducted 200 online interviews from January 27 – February 5, 2016, to secure a nationally significant representation. Forty percent of respondents were union members and 60 percent were not.

New Tennessee-sourced 5.6-liter Endurance® V8 Gasoline Engine to Power Nissan TITAN and TITAN XD

March 29, 2016 by · Leave a Comment
Filed under: New, News, Trucks & Vans

nissan titan xd v8

  • Advanced Endurance® V8 produces 390 horsepower, 401 lb-ft of torque; will be available in both TITAN and TITAN XD
  • Joins award-winning Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel to round out “every duty” TITAN XD engine lineup
  • V8 gasoline-powered TITAN XD Crew Cab goes on sale in early spring 2016, following this month’s arrival of TITAN XD diesel models

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan announced today that a new 5.6-liter Endurance® V8 gasoline engine, assembled in Decherd, Tennessee, will be available in the all-new TITAN and TITAN XD full-size pickup trucks, completing the first phase of the “American TITAN” story. The engine features four-valves per cylinder, Variable Valve Event & Lift and Direct Injection, and is rated at 390 horsepower @ 5,800 rpm and 401 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm.

The gasoline-powered engine joins the award-winning Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel in early spring 2016 to round out the engine offerings for the all-new Nissan XD full-size pickup, which stakes out a unique position in the segment between traditional heavy-duty and light-duty entries. The bold new design combines the capabilities of a heavy-duty hauler with the drivability and affordability of a light-duty pickup.

“With this new engine, Nissan TITAN XD customers will have the opportunity to make the choice that is best for their towing and hauling needs – either the all-new Endurance V8 or the Cummins® diesel – two offerings that you won’t find on any other truck on the market today,” said Rich Miller, chief product specialist, TITAN, Nissan North America, Inc. “It’s going to be a tough decision for TITAN XD customers between these two very durable, capable engines.”

While the new Endurance V8 shares its displacement with the previous-generation V8 installed in Titan, that is where the similarities end. The new engine features 390 horsepower (up from 317) and 401 lb-ft of torque (up from 385), along with Nissan’s advanced VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) technology, which combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake and exhaust sides to provide high performance and crisp response. Throttle response is enhanced by directly controlling the intake valve, rather than using the traditional method of controlling intake with a throttle valve, and valve timing and opening with non-variable camshafts.

The new engine also features Direct Injection Gas (DIG™) technology, which provides better wide-open throttle performance and improved fuel economy and emissions performance (versus a non-direct-injection system) by reducing engine knock, improving combustion stability and offering precise injection control. An 11.2:1 compression ratio is provided by a new piston design, aiding overall engine efficiency and performance (previous Titan: 9.8:1) and a Multi Control Valve (MCV) assists in managing the engine’s thermal efficiency better than a traditional thermostat.

TITAN XD models equipped with the Endurance V8 engine will be outfitted with a new 7-speed automatic, which features Adaptive Shift Control and Downshift Rev Matching.

More information on the Endurance V8 and 7-speed automatic will be available closer to its early spring 2016 on-sale date.

About TITAN XD
The all-new 2016 Nissan TITAN XD full-size pickup has been named one of three finalists for the 2016 North American Truck/Utility of the Year (NATOY) and was also recently named “Truck of Texas” by the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in their annual 2015 Texas Truck Rodeo, which puts the industry’s best trucks, SUVs and CUVs through a grueling two-day evaluation at the historic Knibbe Ranch in Spring Branch, Texas. In addition to the competition’s top award, Truck of Texas, the new TITAN XD won three other honors – Luxury Pickup Truck of Texas, Off-Road Pickup Truck of Texas and Best Powertrain for its available Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel engine.

The TITAN XD’s long list of innovative available technologies include an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, Trailer Sway Control (TSC), Tow/Haul Mode with Downhill Speed Control and a Trailer Light Check system that allows one-person hook-up operation – including checking turn signals, brake lights and running/clearance lights. Assisting trailer hook-ups is a RearView Monitor with Trailer Guides. TITAN XD also offers an available Around View® Monitor (AVM), which provides a unique “bird’s eye” view of the surrounding area to help with parking and pulling in and out of tight spaces. The system includes Moving Object Detection (MOD). Two trailer hitches are available, including an integrated gooseneck hitch engineered into the frame and easily accessible in the bed.

The TITAN XD is offered in five grade levels: S, SV, SL, Platinum Reserve and the sporty PRO-4X grade with standard off-road features such as 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with all-terrain off-road tires, Bilstein off-road shock absorbers, electronic locking rear differential and skid plates. The TITAN XD Platinum Reserve grade features premium leather-appointed heated seating, dark chrome exterior trim, two-tone paint treatment, leather-wrapped steering wheel with wood insert, 20-inch dark chrome aluminum-alloy wheels and much more.

Following the launch of the 2016 TITAN XD Crew Cab in December, the new TITAN will be offered in three cab configurations, two frame sizes, three powertrain offerings and five grade levels. More information on the full lineup will be available at a later date.

SENCO Covers All of the Connections

March 3, 2016 by · Leave a Comment

CINCINNATI (March 3, 2016) – The movement and containment of air from the compressor to pneumatic tools is essential to maintaining effective operating pressure. To improve efficiency SENCO has introduced its premium Hybrid Hose and an assortment of swivel couplers and plugs.

The hybrid air hose combines the two best features of existing air hoses in the market today. Rubber air hoses o¬ffer the best flexibility but, rubber breaks down and will eventually crack and rupture. In contrast, PVC air hoses o¬ffer a greater durability, their primary drawback is the lack of flexibility and has a significant memory that will retain the coiled shape especially in cold temperatures. The new hybrid polymer hoses have the flexibility of a rubber air hose but the long life of a PVC air hose.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS
• Ultra flexible even in extreme temperatures (-40° to 150°)
• Lays flat and will not kink when under pressure
• A maximum working pressure of 300-PSI
• Reinforced bend restrictors
• 40% lighter weight than most rubber hoses
• Smooth non-marring finish makes it ideal for indoor trim work where scratching surfaces could create damage

These ¼” hoses come in 50 ft. or 100 ft. lengths and for more demanding applications, SENCO offers field repairable hose ends made with aircraft grade aluminum for easy on-site repair without hose clamps.

Quick connect couplers have been around for a long time. They allow a user the ability to quickly and easily attach and disconnect tools from an air hose. SENCO’s new swivel coupler allows better flexibility of the tool by rotating 360-degrees at a 45-degree angle. This will reduce fatigue and allow the tool to be utilized in tighter work spaces.

Swivel plugs have this same benefit, but they can be difficult to connect to a standard coupler. The small plug tends to swivel as the user tries to make the connection and often times they have to chase the plug as it moves. The swivel coupler still provides the same benefits, but they are much easier to connect. The coupler is held in the hand thus eliminating the chasing effect caused by the swivel coupler.

Both deliver the same air flow as normal coupler and plug and are available in both MPT and FPT styles.

2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty

Get It Done: All-New Ford F-Series Super Duty Chassis Cab Supports Heavier Equipment, Trailers, Most Diesel Power Ever

  • 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty chassis cab earns best-in-class front gross axle weight rating of 7,500 pounds – 250 pounds better than closest competitor – enabling the truck to carry even larger, heavier upfits
  • F-Series Super Duty chassis cab increases gross combined weight rating to best-in-class 40,000 pounds – meaning a fully loaded Super Duty chassis cab and trailer can carry the equivalent of half the maximum combined weight rating of a semi-tractor-trailer on most U.S. highways
  • Super Duty chassis cab with Ford-designed, Ford-built 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 diesel engine increases ratings to 330 horsepower and 750 lb.-ft. of torque – best-ever for Class 4 and Class 5 segments

INDIANAPOLIS, March 1, 2016 – Ford, America’s truck leader, is delivering again for commercial truck customers who keep America moving with the all-new 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty chassis cab – the toughest, smartest, most capable Super Duty chassis cab ever.

With best-in-class capability, the all-new F-350, F-450 and F-550 chassis cab lineup is optimized to help commercial customers be more productive on the job – from clearing snow-filled streets to rescuing stranded motorists to restoring power in a storm.

“Commercial truck customers need tough, capable trucks that can haul heavy equipment to crush challenging jobs,” said Craig Schmatz, Ford Super Duty chief engineer. “The innovations our team has put into the next-generation Super Duty chassis cab are paying off by delivering capability that surpasses the competition.”

  • The next-generation F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty chassis cab lineup features:
  • Best-in-class front gross axle weight rating of up to 7,500 pounds – 250 pounds better than the closest competitor – that supports carrying bigger snowplows, taller utility buckets and cranes, larger ambulance bodies or other specialized vocational body upfits
  • Best-in-class gross combined weight rating of up to 40,000 pounds – the combined weight of the truck and everything it can haul and tow – for both truck and trailer. That’s the equivalent of half the maximum gross combined weight rating of an 18-wheeler semi on most U.S. federal highways
  • 330 horsepower and 750 lb.-ft. of torque from second-generation Ford-designed, Ford-built 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 diesel – best-ever ratings for Class 4 and Class 5 Super Duty chassis cab

Capability starts with all-new frame
Thanks to an all-new backbone, F-350, F-450 and F-550 F-Series chassis cab delivers more work capability than ever.

The all-new frame is the toughest, strongest, most rigid frame ever used in a Super Duty chassis cab. It features 95 percent high-strength steel with eight times more torsional rigidity than the previous frame, through-welded crossmembers, and fully boxed rails under the cab and forward for strength and safety. Open C-channel frame rails behind the cab enable easy body and vocational equipment upfits. All these improvements help deliver the best-in-class 40,000-pound maximum gross combined weight rating and the 500-pound increase in front gross axle weight rating, along with increased towing capacity over the previous Super Duty chassis cab.

Weight savings reinvested for improved capability
Using advanced materials, Ford is saving up to 350 pounds of weight in the all-new F-Series Super Duty – reinvesting that savings into tougher, stronger components.

For the first time, the Super Duty body uses high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy throughout the cab, which improves dent and ding resistance while saving weight for significant increases in towing and payload capability.

“We are reinvesting the weight saved by using advanced materials, giving that savings back to customers with more capability and performance than ever,” said Schmatz.

In addition to the heavier-duty fully boxed frame under the cab, many components are more robust in the new Super Duty, including axles, suspension, driveline and towing hardware.

Powered by Ford
The all-new 2017 Super Duty chassis cab with the proven Ford-built second-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel paired with a commercial-grade six-speed 6R140 automatic transmission adds 30 horsepower and 90 lb.-ft. of torque for a maximum rating of 330 horsepower and 750 lb.-ft. of torque – the highest ever for Super Duty chassis cab.

Ford is the only heavy-duty truck manufacturer to design and build its own diesel engine and transmission combination, ensuring the powertrain will work seamlessly with all chassis components and vehicle calibrations – from concept to execution. The approach enables Ford engineers to optimize vehicle performance across the entire lineup.

Electricians and overhead and underground line workers said cutters were difficult to use in low-clearance applications and required two hands. After six months of in-the-field testing, the Open Jaw Cable Cutter was created with a front-loading jaw instead of the common“hand-cuff” style jaw model.

The cable cutter features a high-leverage ratcheting mechanism allowing for single-handed cutting of

1 1/8 in. communication cable, 600 MCM copper and 750 MCM aluminum, without burrs or sharp edges.

Weighing two pounds and measuring 11.5” long, the cable cutter has red plastic-covered handles with hand guards, a jaw made from hardened proprietary steel, and a one-year warranty.

This simple change to an open jaw design had enormous positive effects.

“The unique open jaw design not only enables end-users to position the cutter head around the cable in a one-handed operation, but also allows them to cut cable in low-clearance applications,” said Thomas R. Klein, Jr., general manager of heavy infrastructure at Klein Tools. “This saves end-users time, effort, and of course, money.”

EC&M’s Product of the Year Competition attracted a record-setting number of entries with 200 submissions from nearly 100 different manufacturers.

“The employees at Klein Tools prove to us why listening to your customers can yield a successful new product launch,” said Mike Eby, editor-in-chief, EC&M Magazine. “The company’s new Open Jaw Cable Cutter works well in tight spaces and facilitates one-handed operation. These features are a welcomed improvement by anyone that has had to handle cable cutting and termination tasks in the field.”
